The Great Debate: Microdermabrasion vs. HydraFacial

By Sarah Buteux, Lead Aesthetician

The holiday preparation season is upon us and you may be wondering just what is the best plan for your skin with myriad social engagements and photo opportunities just around the corner.  Your skin may be experiencing dull tone, uneven texture and a thickened overall feeling after a long summer turned into fall. You may be searching for a solution to restore and enhance your skin without too much downtime or potential ill effects.  Friends in the know have raved about their different treatments, but for your needs and lifestyle, you’ve narrowed it down to two choices: microdermabrasion and HydraFacial.

Microdermabrasion and HydraFacial both exfoliate and brighten the skin, promote the production of collagen, and improve the overall texture and smoothness.  However, only HydraFacial delivers comprehensive benefits by way of the patented Vortex-Fusion tip which infuse a range of specialized super-serums that penetrate 20% deeper than topical application alone.  Because of these serums, the experience itself has been likened to “hydradermabrasion” and it is also these same serums that set HydraFacial apart from microdermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion is an abrasive, non-invasive treatment to remove the thickened outer layer and polish the surface of the skin.  It is a classic, exfoliation-only procedure that treats as deep as a chemical peel without the same potential for sensitivities and irritation.  HydraFacial is a more advanced, more gentle and more effective next generation of microdermabrasion.  A second reason that sets HydraFacial apart from microdermabrasion is the difference in engineering of the exfoliating tip.  While a microdermabrasion tip is similar to an electric palm sander, a HydraFacial tip is a unique, spiral suction tip that dislodges impurities while infusing serums. Using the previous metaphor, the microdermabrasion tip is to the palm sander as the HydraFacial tip is to the carpet shampooer.  Using this tip, the HydraFacial process combines four distinctive rejuvenation steps which include cleansing, two types of exfoliation, extractions, and a final infusion of antioxidants, peptides and hydration.  Even at its most basic, HydraFacial is a fully customizable system for all skin types, tones and conditions with further opportunity for customization and enhanced benefits through the addition of LED therapy or specialized ampoules for concerns such as discoloration or fine lines.

While both treatments provide smoother, softer, deeply exfoliated skin, it is only the HydraFacial that additionally maintains skin health, plumps up fine lines and wrinkles, reduces pigmentation and treats acne.  In our experience, we recommend HydraFacial 90% of the time over microdermabrasion because of the combination of gentle touch and unparalleled, visible results.  And the best part is that HydraFacial does it all with absolutely no downtime!  So if you haven’t made your appointment yet, don’t worry.  We call it a “red-carpet ready treatment” because you can get it before a big event, gathering or holiday photo shoot without concerns about redness, irritation or flaking.  If you want skin that is smoother, plumped and firmed with lasting results, let us help you to look your best.
